SIPDE1. Controlled vs Uncontrolled
- Controlled = has a traffic light, stop sign, or yield sign
- Uncontrolled = no signs or signals
How to know:
Look for lights or signs. If you see one → controlled.
2. 3-way or 4-way
- 3-way = T-shape (one road ends)
- 4-way = + shape (roads cross)
3. Stopping Point
- White stop line
- If none → crosswalk
- If none → before entering intersection
4. Two things to watch
- Pedestrians about to cross
- Cars turning without signaling
- Bikes near curb
- Blind spots (buildings, parked cars)
5. Critical Objects
Roadway Users (CIRCLE)
- Pedestrian → can enter your path suddenly
- Car turning left → may cut you off
Signs & Signals (SQUARE)
- Traffic light → controls right of way
- Stop/Yield sign → forces decision
Road Characteristics (TRIANGLE)
- Multiple lanes → confusion risk
- Crosswalk → pedestrian risk
6. Label lanes with arrows
- Straight → ↑
- Left turn → ←
- Right turn → →
7. Protected LEFT arrow?
- Yes → green arrow present
- No → only regular green (must yield)
8. Protected RIGHT arrow?
- Yes → green arrow present
- Usually no → follow normal right turn rules
9. Right turn on red?
- Yes IF:
- Full stop
- No “No Turn on Red” sign
- Way is clear
- No if sign says not allowed
